Week 3

Ran 9 miles this afternoon around Seneca Park and down Shelbyville Rd. The sun came out and it ended up to be a nice day. A tad windy, but nice. Tried out my new shoes for about 4 miles. I went with a smaller size. I wanted a lighter shoe, but I couldn't do that without sacrificing some cushioning. With me being bigger than the average marathoner, cushioning is real important in absorbing the shock to my feet and knees. So a half-size smaller makes it seem lighter. The shoe fits tighter to my foot. I like them so far...

Side Note: The UofL game today is why my dad taught me never to leave a game until the clock reads 0:00. Go Cards!

Kentucky Derby Marathon 2011

I have started my training. I will be running my first marathon at the end of April. I am very excited and hope to blog about this process over the next few months.

So its been over a year since I've become a "runner" and I'm officially addicted. I have participated in two half-marathons in 2010 and feel I'm ready to move on to a full. My training so far has consisted of slow paced runs. With shorter runs throughout the week and a long run on Saturdays. This Saturday I will be running 9 miles. I will post after about how it went.

More to come...

Derby Mini-Marathon

The morning didn't start out well - my first mini and I was completely unprepared. Left my watch and sunglasses at home. On top of that my iPod didn't work and I haven't ran yet without listening to music. So I was expecting to be bored and not finish with a good time, but it was the opposite. I didn't mind not having music after a while and I finished under my goal of 1:50:00. We started in Iroquois passed DeSales High School and moved through Iroquois Park. It was about Mile 4 when we came out of the park and with the major hills out of the way I decided to pick up the pace. The race continued down Southern Pkwy, through Churchill Downs and then down 4th street into downtown. By the end of the race I moved up passed two pace groups (guys who run with signs with different paces so people can run with him and at the correct pace throughout the race). I felt like I was running smoothly the whole time, most people speed up the last couple miles or so, but I had no reason to push myself with being under my goal pace for most of the race. I think that's why I've stayed healthy and have had almost zero problems physically because I didn't overdue it since our training has started. Shelby ran a good time as well finishing right over 1:58:00. Creeden also made it through at a decent time 2:17:00; even though he was happy with it, I bet if you asked him 4 months ago he never would've thought he could have done that. Overall great experience, the bad weather held off and I feel accomplished. Thank you to Shelby for signing me up without my knowledge - otherwise I wouldn't have ran. Big thanks to Erin, Tyler and Mom for coming down to cheer us on.

My Hero!

I have to tell this story. Sorry Creeden.

So since I've last blogged, my training is up to 10 miles. Knocked that out easy last weekend and feel good going into the Papa John's Ten Miler tomorrow morning, but that's not what I want to share with you. So last weekend's long run weaved through Cherokee and Seneca Park with the circle at Seneca being the half way point - anyways, Creeden wanted me to show him the route by driving it first before we ran. I complied because the last thing I need is him getting lost, it getting dark and we all know what happens back in the park in the dark. So we make our way through the route (He still had no idea which way to go I'm sure) and right as I turn onto Chichester road Creeden precedes to throw up all over the car. Vomits dripping down the inside and outside of the passenger side door. Luckily it was a nice day out so the window was down. That's not even the worse part. A girl is walking her dog no more then 4 feet away. He couldn't keep it til we got home (only a block away) or at least til we passed this poor girl and her dog. Even the dog thought it was nasty and dogs lick their own asses. (sorry for being so graphic Mom, trying to make a point). Sooooooooo Creeden didn't run that day if you didn't already guess.

Short spurt on the training since that is supposed to be the reason I started this blog and not to rip on Edgar Sosa and my friends - Did a lot of running this weekend and my hunger has showed it. I've eaten so much, especially the last few days. A ten mile run burns about 1500 calories so I'm sure that has something to do with it. Wednesday I ran for an hour, biked for 30 min and swam for 20 min and maybe I'm refueling my body? Well I got a race in the morning and other stuff to do so I'm gonna go.
